The London Borough of Waltham Forest produced an ambitious masterplan for Leyton Sports Ground with architects 5th Studio in 2016. Many of its recommendations have since been implemented, including the creation of a new children’s playground and improvements to the layout and landscaping of the grounds. The Borough also partnered with the English Cricket Board to deliver the country’s first Urban Cricket Centre – an indoor facility specifically designed to encourage more participation from a wider demographic.
With the Cricket Centre set to launch, the time was opportune to take stock of past achievements and new circumstances, to redefine the vision for the sports ground and to update its masterplan. We worked with the Council and its stakeholders – including the ECB and Essex County Cricket – to agree a fresh strategy for the site, using sport, leisure, food and fun as encouragement for people to live happier, healthier and more active lifestyles. As an extension of this work, we also produced the application to Sport England’s Community Asset Fund to support the renovation of the Arts Block – an ancillary building to the Cricket Centre which will provide new facilities for indoor activities like yoga, pilates and dance, as well as a club room for cricket teams and community meeting space.
