A short round-up of important or interesting news and reports from our sectors.This year we will be writing a monthly blogpost linking to recent news and reports from the sectors we work in. This is the first, looking back at December 2018.
Culture and creative industries:
It was a busy month for the Mayor of London. He released his draft culture strategy, his draft sport strategy, and announced the six winning Creative Enterprise Zones, which will share £11m between them.
North of the border, the latest Scottish Government budget was published – it includes a chapter on Culture, Tourism and External Affairs.
The Creative Industries Federation surveyed 1,000 creative firms to understand what factors constrain their growth.
Place-making and urban regeneration:
With poor Christmas retail sales highlighting the challenges facing high streets, the Government’s High Streets Expert Panel reported on what might be done to help them.
Arts Council England is publishing a number of reviews of aspects of culture ahead of its forthcoming ten-year strategy – last month these included an exploration of arts and culture’s role in place-making.
And in November, the Raynsford review into planning, commissioned by the TCPA, was published.
Heritage and museums:
This year’s Heritage Counts report was published by Historic England, with a thematic focus on the commercial use of listed buildings. (Fourth Street associate David Geddes was partly responsible for the report.)
The Government produced a list of its heritage-related achievements one year on from the Heritage Statement.
We very much liked Derby Museums’ new business plan for 2018-22 – clear and succinct, it’s a model for the sector.
With Brexit in mind, Visit Britain produced a think-piece on tourism and ‘Global Britain’.
Meanwhile, DCMS started negotiations on a sector deal for the tourism industry.
